There’s a common misconception about the word “bespoke.” Many believe it comes from the back-and-forth between tailor and client — the conversation itself, they say, is the word’s true origin. It’s a charming story, but not quite accurate. The word actually comes from the verb “bespeak” — “be spoken for,” meaning something already promised, already reserved. The moment a bolt of cloth arrived on the shelf, it was already understood who it would become a suit for, long before the scissors ever touched it. Unlike something ready-made and available to anyone, it had, from the very start, been spoken for — for one person alone.

Of course, in the actual process of tailoring, there is genuine conversation — fittings, choices of fabric, adjustments made again and again as tailor and client speak with one another to shape a single garment. It’s no surprise, then, that this image of “conversation” came to attach itself to the word over time. But the word’s true meaning was something simpler, and something more certain from the start: made for you, before anything else.

Our espresso is made the same way. From the moment your order comes in, the beans are ground, pressure applied, and just one shot extracted, right there on the spot. Nothing sits waiting in advance. This single cup, in this single moment, is made only for you.

Whether we speak or not, it’s always made only for you.
